{"id":50,"date":"2015-04-27T07:33:47","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T07:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gulunap.unina.it\/scienze\/?p=50"},"modified":"2015-04-27T07:33:47","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T07:33:47","slug":"naplesuganda-education-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gulunap.unina.it\/scienze\/2015\/04\/27\/naplesuganda-education-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"Naples\/Uganda education collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gulunap is an educational-scientific collaboration between the University\u00a0of Naples Federico II, in Italy, and the University of Gulu, in\u00a0Northern-Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Uganda has major problems with food, health and education, having\u00a0been devastated by a twenty-year long insurgence by the Lords Resistance Army: with over 100,000 people dead, 20,000 children abducted, and\u00a01,200,000 Ugandan citizens left in internally displaced person camps. The Gulunap project focuses on the long-term sharing of knowledge between\u00a0these two, highly diverse, socio-cultural contexts.<\/p>\n<p>The 2012 Antonio Feltrinelli prize was awarded to the Gulunap project by\u00a0the Accademia dei Lincei, which it considers an exceptional project of\u00a0high moral and humanitarian value.<\/p>\n<p>As its first \u00a0and largest \u00a0initiative Gulunap set up a faculty of\u00a0medicine from scratch, in 2004. The school \u00a0housed in classrooms and\u00a0laboratories built by the project \u00a0supports a five-year curriculum,\u00a0covering first treatments; disease prevention; maternal and infant health; and tropical medicine, and includes a one-year internship.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2010, 164 medical doctors have graduated from the faculty \u00a0with\u00a0most now working in Uganda \u00a0and over 40 professors from Naples having taught at Gulu. In addition, didactic materials have been made freely\u00a0available on the Internet, and the school has launched both a medical\u00a0students association and a medical journal.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the Gulunap-Science project was started. This scheme aimed to\u00a0train secondary school teachers in science education, covering such activities as , covering such activities as discussing results and\u00a0proposals from physics and science educational research; designing and\u00a0implementing new courses; starting\/organising laboratories, focusing on\u00a0easily-reproducible experiments based on low-cost local materials; and\u00a0educating young university staff. Special attention was given to the use\u00a0of experiments.<\/p>\n<p>Biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics teachers were involved in the\u00a0project; with over ten Naples professors. For in-service physics teachers, two one-week full-immersion Northern Uganda Teachers of Science [NUTS]\u00a0workshops were undertaken, in 2006 and 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Gulunap-Agriculture was launched in 2008, with the objectives of: reducing\u00a0food insecurity and malnutrition; developing agro-forest research, focusing on the sustainable use of natural resources to minimise\u00a0environmental impact; developing post-harvest technology; help the University of Gulus younger staff participate in the University of\u00a0Naples Masters and Doctorate programmes.
